About This Project

Birch Walk

The approach to the design was to ensure a simple, clean and versatile extension that improved the character of the existing property and that was in keeping with the surrounding context. This was achieved by picking out elements and materials of the existing building and translating these into a more contemporary external appearance and this then had the same effect on the feel of the internal spaces.

The proposal incorporated a first-floor extension to part of the building to provide a larger bedroom accommodation and a contemporary flat roof extension to the garden side of the building. In order to emphasis the views over the garden and enhance the contemporary feel of the living accommodation the spaces were designed with large, glazed sliding doors connecting the indoors with the outdoors. In addition there was a new out-building situated at the site’s lower level, which incorporated a green roof that helped to reduce its scale greatly and make it feel part of the garden.

The project was designed and constructed using a fast- track procurement approach, enabling occupation by the client only 13 months after acquiring the site.
